200,000 march for

Jesús

200,000 evangelical Christians are reported to have gathered on Tuesday, April 29 on the mall in Washington, D.C. to participate in "Washington for Jesus," a march and rally sponsored by One Nation Under God, Inc., a coalition of fundamentalists groups. The stated aim of the event was to "call the nation back to righteousness and morality."

Rev. Pat Robertson, a chairman of the march told reporters at a press conference in Washington, "There is one ruler over the affairs of men, God Almighty. Every leader in this city holds his tenure only so long as God wills it, and they have no authority except as God gives it to them. So the Congress and the President are secondary to us. And God was here today to hear us."

Organizers of "Washington for Jesus" had planned to issue a "Declaration of Christian Principles which participants in the event would have endorsed, but the organizers finally decided not to issue it after many critics,

including evangelist Billy Graham, condemned it as being a right-wing political ploy.

The declaration would have called upon America to repent for homosexuality, divorce, pornography, fornication, keeping prayer out of public schools, and "humanism," and would have urged a drive to "frame laws, statutes, and ordinances that are in harmony with God's Word."

"Repeal those rulings, laws, statutes, and ordinances which have offended Him," it would have demanded.

Attention veterans

Gay men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces and have been discharged solely for "homosexual acts or tendencies" may benefit from two recent government rule changes.

Current policy calls for "honorable" discharges in such cases which do not involve aggravating circumstances" such as rape or sexual involvement with a minor. Veterans who have been given "general" or "dishonorable" discharges in such cases are entitled to apply for upgradings of their discharges to "honorable."

this date, applications for upgrading will be accepted discharge. regardless of the date of

There is ordinarily a fifteen "Washington for Jesus" activi-year limitation on such applicaties included a mass Congrestions but this rule has been sussional lobbying effort on Mon-pended until April 1, 1981. Until day, April 28, the day before the march and rally, and reports from indicate that the lobbyists called various Congressional offices for the defeat of lesbian and gay rights bills currently under consideration by Congress, as well as passage of legislation allowing prayer in public school, and a constitutional amendment pro hibiting abortion.

has now amended its own rules so that a veteran given a "dishonorable" discharge solely because of homosexuality without "aggravating circumstances" may receive a "favorable character of service" classification with respect to eligibility for benefits directly from the Veterans Administration without first having the discharge upgraded by a military review board.

The main advantage to having a discharge upgraded to "honorable" is fuller eligibility for veterans' benefits.

Those who want more information about both discharge upgrading and VA reclassification can write to the Veterans Education Project of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, 1346 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, or call (202) 466-2244.
